This Queen Ann mansion in Bedford-Stuyvesant reveals the borough’s spirit for preservation, and its current vibrancy Throughout Brooklyn one regularly encounters structures that recall its nineteenth century past. In once blighted sections – where portions of blocks have been removed – it’s not uncommon to find craggy edifices rising from the bedrock with empty space on one or both sides of it, magnifying its monumental appearance.

May 2007 - Loew's Kings Theatre, Flatbush Avenue, Brooklyn.
The old theater on Flatbush Avenue is born again following an immaculate renovaton. There are two visible changes from the theater's facade shown here and when it opened in 1929. The surviving marquee dates to the 1950s and is less ostensible than the original marquee that appeared more like a serpentine canopy. As well, a bracket remains on the theater's center facade that once hoisted a four-story-tall sign that illuminated Flatbush Avenue with the letters, L-O-E-W-'-S.

July 2003 - 135 Joralemon Street, Brooklyn New York.
Built in 1833, the Federal Style Row House at 135 Joralemon Street is one of Brooklyn Heights oldest and cherished landmarks. On New Year's eve in 2004, a fire devastated the interior and nearly claimed the wood frame vestige, but it was preserved beautifully four years later. Other than its windows missing their original shutters, the facade, with its clapboard siding, gable dormers and ornamental iron porch, has changed little over the years. A famous photograph of the landmark row house was taken by Berenice Abbott in 1936.

January 2005 - Empire State VI, dry docked for repairs in the Erie Basin, Red Hook, Brooklyn.
This Merchant Marine vessel, first launched in 1961, is used for training by the United States Maritime Administration. From its keel to its radar mast, the height of the Empire State VI measures 138 feet and extends some 565 feet from bow to stern. The industrial setting is sometimes described as a graving dock and remains a symbol of Red Hook's maritime history; the floating dry dock was once one of the world's largest, it was constructed at the close of the Civil War. During the months after this photograph was made, the area changed dramatically when the shipyard buildings that ringed the harbor were demolished to make way for a new IKEA store.
